Morning Meetings
We wake up the next day, our second full day in the Capital.

We have a note from Princess Alasta to see her at 10, and a note from Suvatra for Vidan to see her at his convenience.

Talinda (who was sneaking around invisibly) is not Merchant Varna, she is Priest varna, but gets to work in Merchant Varna because her husband is Merchant Varna. But that may explain why she is less well-versed in Merchanting than many. She is a Priest of Love, apparently. Suvatra thinks that’s interesting and unusual, but not obviously evil or anything. Vidan considers cross-Varna marriages– Priests and Merchants are less likely to have arranged marriages, so they might be more likely. But it’s rare; you mostly socialize in your own Varna, so there are fewer opportunities. It’s hard to change Varna once you’re an adult, unless you’re Servant Varna.

Stationary woman looks like Mirandal, nothing very exciting there.

Suvatra has also been considering if the assassins are taking a broader… are planning to eliminate the Maharani’s support prior to moving on her directly. The people who are the most likely targets (there are many possible targets) are the three adult princesses; Suvatra; Lord Tongree; and Minabel. Lord Tongree is the head of the closest allied House; if he was removed it would weaken her. (It’s a bit strange that there is a man in charge of a Great House. Hmm. Vidan thinks about that. He’s head of house in his 5-year-old daughter’s name, which is technically legal, though all of the women in the House have to have been gotten rid of one way or another. He was at the party last night, though we didn’t realize he was head of house. He’s known to be strongly allied with the Maharani; there are rumors that it is a romantic as well as political alliance. If they were to marry, he would have to leave his House to join hers. His wife was killed about four years ago; an assassin was blamed and killed for it. But even 12 successes of Yellow Politics isn’t enough to determine the reason.) Minabel is the chief of the Maharani’s bodyguards.

Suvatra has appraised Lord Tongree’s House, and has been in contact with Minabel. She has not spoken directly to the three princesses, but Minabel’s peoples are presumably informed, who are responsible for guarding the two Princesses. Tasca is not in the House any more, technically, since she’s Priest Varna now, so she is not technically protected by the bodyguards (although the bodyguards would probably act to defend her if they were right there). But she’s the Church’s responsibility now. She is also a skilled combatant, more in the swashbuckly style than the brick style, and has Priest powers. She has not been directly warned. Suvatra is not clear how much the Princesses will pay attention to the warnings, as assassination attempts are common. Tasca will probably hear from Miranel (party princess) relatively soon. Actually she was at the party, so she will probably have been informed by now.

If Lord Tongree were killed, then the wife’s younger sister would become Head of House. If the source of that assassination were revealed, that would invite reprisals, but not as much as if the daughter were killed, since she’s only 5. (Which might embroil the House in an internal power struggle for a bit.)

Meeting with Princess Alasta
The Princess wants a debrief on yesterday; how did we know about the Walls, etc. Vidan says we have a Priest of the Goddess, who is skilled at ferreting out such things. Ah, she is Lore’s servant? No, she serves the Goddess. “She’s from Orange,” Vidan explains. Ah.

Do we have any way of knowing if Mikaekovich was actually from Orange? Not divine, no, although there were clues that he might not be– the way he introduced himself as from Orange, say. We found Green spell components, so he could have been Rainbow, which means not from Orange. Nesh thinks his Saurien wasn’t particularly accented; maybe very slightly closer to Blue than Orange.

The Princess is interested to hear that, though it makes her investigations more difficult.

The Wall was supposed to be in construction for another 6 months; Stella thinks maybe 4 if they kept up the pace they were going on. So it wasn’t a short term plot. It’s not clear whether there was a plan for the river. Princess Alasta indicates that the river is fairly well-defended, they’ve mostly been attacking via land.

We give her a Tarn evidence packet.

Vidan wonders if this wall project is madness; Scout thinks it’s a bit mad to be doing it now, but when it will be useful once it’s done. It’s probably a Resources country turn draw in a turn or two to make it an applicable defense. It’s not a bad plan. Especially if they have any kind of insight that an attack is coming, which, this being Yellow, they might.

It wasn’t Mikhailovich’s idea, but his arrival did make the idea plausible. Scout wonders if he could have known about it before arriving. There had been discussion of increased defenses for a few years, since the Comet lit the night sky. There was debate about whether the wall was the most useful approach, but with his arrival the Wall plan seemed more useful. Without an Orange mage, we’ll see whether it continues. Does Stella have any recommendations? Stella doesn’t off-hand, but her Sister Meraldi would know. The Princess gets some details and makes plans to speak to her.

At the Wall
We go back to the Wall. There are three large holes in it. There has been some propping up to make sure the walls don’t fall down more. They have not started fixing it in any way shape or form, however– it only blew up yesterday.

Stella takes a look with Engineering and Fixing Things and KS: Stone. She can make some progress. If she could drop 20 successes with 10 DI, then she could probably do it fairly quickly, but that would be hard. Vidan suggests a ritual, if she got some local priests. Hmm. Given the politics, maybe we should get Alasta to arrange that. We report back to Alasta that she could

As we’re around the palace, a bit after Nesh has dropped his defenses for a few minutes to see if there are any calls, we discover that there’s a sneaky cataur wandering by. Nesh decides to go with the direct route, and asks if he’s looking for him. Alex - a cataur. Has a small miracle of “don’t pay attention to me”. Plus an illusion that makes him look like a centaur.

Nothing More than Feelings
Managaratha wanders off to look for Yellow mages. Vikarna (the harbinger of the Feelings plot) calls Managaratha. She’s on a boat, she’s outside of Yellow. Feelings here… she can’t tell if it’s weird, because there’s less of it than usual. I thought of some ideas for how to test it. I talked to Satrapi, I gave her some ideas for a Feelings ritual you could do. So talk to her. Vikarna is going to head to Blue, she probably can’t get the captain to turn around.

Managaratha is going to look at transport to make things faster. He says he’ll get in touch with her later. Who is Satrapi? Sigh. A mage in the capital.

Vidan makes arrangements for a meeting between Satrapi and Managaratha. She has a nice house in the capital. She’s probably in her 40s - 50s, going slightly grey, well-dressed. She has been contacted by Vikarna, who has made arrangements for us to get some kind of sense of how Feelings magic works. We don’t have any Feelings mages, right? Right. Vidan is Purple. Oh, that’s not going to help at all. Nesh has DI resistance.

How this will work. We’ll meditate on how we feel about things, internally, which will generate some ability to… Well. Illusion works through the voice and what you should see. Feelings works by echoing the feeling that you want to generate in yourself. None of us have talent to learn to cast spells with that, but we can maybe see something about what’s going on, in a ritual that uses Illusions to help us see the Feelings magic.

She herself is not convinced that something is changing with Feelings, but having been paid, is happy to do the ritual. Scout puts up a miracle of seeing things– 9 successes with 6 DI.

We play Apples to Apples, ish. We try to match Brilliant, Charming, and Selfish. Nesh just talks gibberish– Rock Concert, Car Horns, The NRA? What the heck? We decide Inside the Sun is the most brilliant, Getting a Hug is the most charming, and Hooligans were the most selfish. Nesh is out of cards, so we decide to do the ritual again.

Next round: Rich. We pick Lawyers. Unscrupulous we pick Spiders. Scout notices something weird on that one. All of a sudden Stella has played Spiders, when Managaratha had originally played. Weird. Misunderstood we play Killer Whales. Pure is Lightning– the cards switch again. Swift is Tornadoes. Speedy is Blizzard. and they change again! Scout is finding this very weird! Soft is Socks, and they change again! Boisterous is between Chimpanzees, and My 16th Birthday. Chimpanezees wins, but Managaratha played Stella’s 16th Birthday? That’s weird… Demanding: Funerals. Which Stella also wins.

Vidan does a miracle of Witnessing, 3 DI, 13 succeses. Round 3! Sappy is won by Being in Love. Which Stella played, dah! Fabulous: Weddings. Honorable, Stella played Scout’s Job? Weird to everyone! Phony had no consensus. Zany, Stella played Managaratha’s Hair. Fragrant – Scout plays Corn on the Cob, which Stella stole. Stella steals Taking a Bath for Luxurious. Touchy-Feely was Managaratha’s Body, which Stella played!

The rituals end. Vidan thinks that Stella is a Priest of the Goddess, and Feelings are her thing. Which is not the way that’s supposed to work. Satrapi concedes there were some perturbations that were interesting, that she’ll talk to Vikarna about.

Vidan thinks about whether Priests of the Twins are better at Purple than other mages. He makes a Karma check with 6 successes, and gets the option to invoke his once a book schtick– and Nivad shows up! As a Priest of the Twins, he doesn’t think being a Priest is any better at Purple. But he could imagine such a connection might be drawable between Balance and Truth, or maybe Balance and Discipline… But it’s not a thing by default. Nobody but Scout seems to pay much attention to the fact that Vidan is now Nivad.

Are the Gods allied with different Magics? Rush could be Battle? The Goddess would probably be Feelings, when thinking about Comparative Religions.

Back to the Palace
Stella spends the afternoon on the Wall.

Nivad checks Vidan’s mail– people are constantly misspelling his name. Scout thinks the level of self-deception is ridiculous. His realtor has found him a place, so he goes and sets up the ritual. This room is no longer Yellow. Interesting… Scout gets teleported in by Managaratha, doing an experiment to see if we can target Nivad. Thinking about it, Vidan thinks maybe it’s Heart of Purple water that is part of the thing.

A Bureaucrat shows up. “Now that there’s an escape route, I've come to give you information about Emergency Plan Alpha from the Ministry of Lions.” He teleports out, and Nivad reads the packet. “If you are restored absent my cooperation, you are presumably somewhat confused as to the status of the Reconcile the Churches project. Come see me at your earliest convenience. –Az Julan, Minister of Lions” (Navid is an actual Bureaucrat, in a way that Vidan is not. Probably a Third level Bureaucrat, but he’s missing a bunch of his points. “Frag will do that”, thinks Managaratha, elsewhere in the city.)

After dinner, Alasphel (the servant from the Caravan) shows up, asking for Stella. “Lady Stella. While we were travelling, you and your friends happened to deal with a plot of the Lady of Life and her followers, to deal with Suvatra. I can’t prove that it was the Lady of Life, but it was. I was wondering if the lot of you would be willing to interfere with another of her projects.” Hmm. A similar type of project? “I believe it is for the same long-term project, though not so aggressive.”

(Stella has been told that traditionally the three faces of the Church pursue different ends, but are not opposed to each other. The present three Ladies, and by extension their Servants, are in active opposition.)

What does she need? It is her understanding that there will be a ceremony this evening to give a blessing to a member of the nobility who is in a good place to benefit should the Maharani suffer unfortunate consequences in the future. She believes that it’s part of the Lady of Life’s plan to replace the Maharani for the ritual to go well. Unfortunately it’s taking place in the Church of Life, and only followers of the Lady and their guests can attend. It is her belief that, as a follower of the Goddess, she would be able to attend, since she is not Life or Lore, and therefore must be Life. She doesn’t know the details, or that it would be a Fight per se, but some kind of interference would be helpful. The target for the blessing is Rani Dwalla is the head of house Sukrat, and the Lady of Life’s niece. So the blessing is not illegitimate, but she believes it is a step to oppose the Maharani.

The current expectation is the Maharani will be returning in 2 days. Why are we seeing the Maharani again? We Have Been Summoned. Oh right. She probably wants to know about her nephew.

What are our plots again? Vidan was supposed to help stop assassination attempts. Did we do that? No, it was probably the Maharani? Hmm.

We had some goofs to help, did we help them? Well, we helped them a bit. They’re probably not harmful any more.

Managaratha wants to look into what’s going on with Feelings magic. Nesh is still being hunted.

Catching Up With Suvatra
With nothing specific on our agenda (and Managaratha still being sleepy) we wait for the plot to descend.
It descends in the form of a note from Suvatra, who wishes to see Vidan at his convenience (which he interprets as Right Now).

We go to the palace! It is more open than a Red castle, it’s more of a working government building. It’s less defensible than Orange areas, even, but there are more guards, so maybe they’re using people rather than walls.

Suvatra gives some files. Background check on Vestal, there’s not much there. She did have a merchant shop, although she hadn’t been there in a while. Vidan thinks about it with Detective– it cuts off abruptly about 4 years ago, which lines up with Mangaratha’s scrying. There are two mysterious deaths that happened where she was at the time. They were both politicians, neither of them are specifically tied to the Maharani. Thinking about it, neither of them are in the Maharani’s House, but they would have been relevant to the new Maharani were the Maharani to fall. One of them died violently. No political ramifications are in the file.

She also has a file on Merindal Laman, the jeweler Stella was working with. Seems to be basically a jeweler, Merchant Varna her whole life. She’s moderately ambitious, there are some indications of notable sales, moving up the hierarchy of important people being sold to over the last several years. Nothing looks awry, but there is definitely an attempt to curry political favor. Which is plausibly just being a good merchant. Stella thinks she’s not maximizing for profit, though. SHe is selling to both Noble and Priest Varna; most of her sales to Priest varna appear to have been to Lore’s servants, rather than Love or Life. That has changed over the last few years.

[Elizabeth interrupts to ask “Why do you all sit in the same places?” “Because we are old.”]

Suvatra is still putting together files on the other four Vidan asked about. (The other three that Stella was working with and Talinda.)

Managaratha shows up. It’s not entirely clear how, maybe he teleported?

There’s nothing else Suvatra wants from us today. Vidan inquires politely whether there is a… retired spy he could talk with to learn something from? She can probably arrange something, though not today.

Suvatra adds that, given the indications in Vestal’s file and the fact that she came after Suvatra, she is somewhat concerned that the people opposed to her Majesty are trying to cut off Her Majesty’s support before going after Her Majesty, so if we could keep an eye out for that, she would appreciate it.

It is traditional for the three Houses of the Goddess to have different goals, but to the extent they are opposing each other, that would be newer. Managaratha thinks it is more common for Churches to fight each other, rather than schism.

Suvatra says we will probably not be meeting with the Maharani in open court, but that will of course be her decision.

Thus ends our meeting with Suvatra.

Finding the Next Plot: The Walls
Scout ponders going to the Tree Network. Vidan thinks maybe wait until after the Maharani meeting, in case it takes five weeks. Scout could maybe think about how to get humans in to see the Tree network, before we actually go. That’s probably a good idea.

With lack of any real target, Stella decides to find out what needs fixing in the capital and BRINGs IT. 15 successes, 10 DI.

The biggest thing that needs fixing that we don’t know about is the City Walls. That was a harder answer to get than expected, so there’s not a ton left over. Other things that potentially need fixing are: stuff going on with Vidan’s plot, stuff going on with Managaratha’s plot, but there is some Church involvement there, so there’s not much more detail. She’s not really concerned about the Tree Network, it’s not so much her plot. (Scout rolls his lack of eyes.) Something interesting would probably happen if Nesh dropped his defenses, but that might not count as Fixing, per se.

On the checklist of 7, there’s not much to be done about Gale’s and Diomarche’s because they’re not here.

We go looking for walls. As it turns out, we didn’t see any Walls on the way in. There have not been walls historically, but we get pointed the right direction. (Nesh, poking around, gets asked if he’s working for Michaelaiovich.)

A casual poke around doesn’t reveal too much about how long this has been. Stella thinks if they’re using Orange they could probably wall the city in a month or so; if they’re not, it would take a year. The walls seem to be pretty good, it’s not clear yet if they’ll have gates or anything. The river is going to complicate things a bit. The city is mostly on the north bank, but there are suburbs/settlements south of the river. But the Walls will seriously rearrange how the city works. Stella ponders whether they’re using Orange. They’re using regular construction methods, but we’d have to get closer (past the guards) to know much more.

Stella asks who’s in charge around here. Princess Alasta is the general overseeing the project; she’s not involved day-to-day, that’s a captain. They have a Saurien doing a lot of the engineering design work– Mikhailovich. He’s from Orange, and is an Orange mage (and a Yellow mage). They don’t think that’s unusual, but there aren’t many sauriens here, so they don’t know much about what’s unusual for them.

Vidan tries to convince the Captain that Stella is an amazing priest of the Goddess from Orange who can help with efficiency, etc. She’s a Miracle Worker!, he says. WIth 13 success of Persuasion, Charming, and Duping, the Captain gives us an escort to let us take a look around and introduce us to Michaelovich, etc.

Vidan tries to give himself and Stella the ability to see what they need to see, but 4/4 is not big enough. Interesting. Stella looks around. Nothing obviously needs fixing. There is definitely Forge magic being used periodically, probably mostly to speed things up. e.g., “dry all the mortar here”. The Saurien definitely does this at some point.

Scout looks around. There aren’t any miracles on the wall. But with 6 Karma successes, he notices there is an area that he can’t see, in the Foundation, he just doesn’t have enough Per to see it. That is interesting. He points it out to Stella. It’s a little below ground level, but over there. Stella channels Gale, and Wilds up an “Analyze Wall” spell. She only burns out 1, and gets 14 successes on her 20 dice!

This is a reasonable defensive wall, not particularly Orange engineered, no obvious flaws. Construction has been sped up with Orange magic. And there is a place down there that has more than 14 successes of Anti-Magic something. It’s probably a 3’ x 3’ x 3’. So… maybe a bomb. But a slith bomb or a saurien bomb. Hmm.

Stella inquires about the protection on the construction site– they’ve had guards up since the beginning of the project.

Nesh pulls Mikhailovich to the side and speaks to him in Saurien– can he have a word? Are there anti-magic defenses in the wall? Well, there is some plan to add things later, yes. But the box over there? Is he concerned about that? Just between Sauriens, Nesh doesn’t care too much, unless maybe it’s a secret slith plot– should he try to deflect investigations into it? Mikhailovich seems to acknowledge it’s there, and, after some conversation/sense motives rolls, he says he doesn’t care if we investigate further.

We leave, and go report to Suvatra. She… is distressed about the fact that it is a 3’x3’x3’ anti-magic field. She gets a message from Princess Alasta– something has happened at the wall, and wants her help. We go with her to the wall, and meet Princess Alasta and a group of soldiers. Something bad has happened, serious damage to several parts of it. Alasta acknowledge that Suvatra’s job is Investigation, in a way that it’s not Alasta’s job. (Suvatra is apparently the spymaster…)

When we get there, there are a number of holes in the wall, including the location we had seen. It’s mostly not a wall any more. Vidan looks around, and is pretty clear that the bombs went off. Suvatra does some investigating, and signs are pretty clear that Mikhailovich was behind this, and he has vanished since. “Better now than later, probably.” “Better now than during a siege, yes.”

Vidan inquires with Suvatra about how the decision to make the Wall was arrived at– Alasta has been interested for a while, it’s not clear how she first got in touch with Mikhailovich. She thinks Alasta is competent, but not an engineer, so they could have slipped past her. Suvatra is concerned about the information-gathering abilities of the slith.

Thinking about it, Stella thinks it’s a bit suspicious that Mikhailovich had that level of skill but wasn’t in the Guild– he didn’t use a title like Journeyman or Master. So… either he’s not from Orange, or was in the Guild once and was kicked out, or… something.

Scout scouts around, since they’ll let us walk. There were three successive explosions– action, action, action. No one appears to have been killed, but there are injuries, which is actually fairly lucky. The workers weren’t on break, but they were further down the wall, then where the bombs were. Scout’s pretty sure they were black powder explosions. How was it detonated? Probably magic– a Saurien orange mage could have “bypass my own defenses” as a schtick. Stella could think of ways to trigger the bomb by, say, turning the rock right above the bomb into lava, triggering the fuse.

We stay with Suvatra for the few hours while she’s at the Wall, but she also has guys summoned who continue to do the work.

Back at the Palace
An invitation to Princess Miranel’s ball aways us! It is this evening. She is one of the Queen’s two eligible daughters. The elder is Alasta. There was another daughter who left the Noble Varna to join the Priest varna.

We wear our fancy party clothes, and go to the Ball! Miranel (who is early 20s) is the host, and clearly knows who we are– she greets us each by name, and inquires after Captain Gale and Diomarche. Alasta makes a brief appearance, Suvatra does not. The ball is for the important people of the city– Noble and Priest varna, no Merchant varna. Vidan puts up some Detect Nobility mojo, to not fail to recognize anyone important.

Vidan gathers info on what people are talking about. The explosion of the wall, the war with the slith. Not the assassination of Suvatra (who is a vizier, one of several), interestingly. Maybe she kept it quiet, maybe people didn’t notice? (Alasta on the other hand is a princess and a general, although she’s relatively young.) Miranel does not seem to have a job besides being a princess. Tasca, who is one of Love’s Servants, and who is reported to be a good fighter, is also here.

Lisatera shows up briefly. There are a few centaur, but only a few. We’re not completely sure if that’s because this is a Ball, or if it’s that they’re not fully integrated into society that much. No one’s rude to them, but there is a level of separateness to them. It’s almost as if there’s in their own varna. People dance with each other, but they gossip in their varna subgroup.

There are a few nobles and a priest among the centaurs. The lone priest centaur wanders back and forth between the centaurs and the human priest group. Miranel also mixes fairly easily. She must cares enough about the varna rules that she didn’t invite any Merchants.

Nesh is the only saurien in the room.

Vidan and Stella seem to be assigned to the Priest varna, in a way. The other three of us are less clearly assigned, and can do more floating back and forth. The room tries to find a place to put Managaratha and Scout among the varnas.

Managaratha tries to be in Mage varna, which isn’t a thing. He talks to people, and notices that the Noble mages tend to be more practical, whereas the Priest mages tend to be more theoretical, as a general trend. He tries to discuss Feelings and Unreality with them; they think it’s interesting he doesn’t know the other flavors of Yellow. They seem to not interact with so many foreigners, possibly because it’s far and nobody here can teleport.

Managaratha gets one out of one Karma, which means he catches the Centaur’s priestess’ ear when he says that Magic can change during Comets. She is curious about that. He explains his theories on change during the time of the Comets.

Vidan also wants to make a Sense Motive roll on Miranel, to see if she’s really a good host or a social butterfly or a pose. She’s definitely enjoying what she’s doing, but she’s also doing an excellent job at gathering information. She doesn’t seem to be fishing for specific things, but she’s certainly learning things in general.

Nesh tries to gather some information, and notices that the varnas are clearly not united. There are three groups in the Priest varna (Love, Life, and Lore)-- they try to one-up each other. The Nobles are more divided, and more active sniping going on. They seem willing to not fight because there’s a war with slith going on, but they’re definitely more aware of who’s in charge of whom, etc. The struggle is more active, although no one is saying they should be Maharani or anything obvious like that. But they’re more opponents than in the Priest varna.

Scout notices there are fewer illusions than you might suspect. The music is all real; the lights are spells. There are charisma buffs, mostly on people who are less important. The decorations are all real. There’s an element of “we’re good enough we don’t need the buffs” going on here that we haven’t seen before. Many people have detections up, but they’re probably not see-through-illusions. There’s not a lot of active DI; it’s all Goddess except for Vidan. It’s not clear what much of it is doing– some kind of healing for one of them etc. The Priest varna is not all priests, by any stretch, but they all identify as one of Life, Lore, or Love.

The elves are mostly high elves, a few trolls and sylph. No pooka, that was probably a conscious choice. No halflings, only a few sluagh in the Priest varna. And a few half-elves. The priests are more aligned with the other Priest varna; the Nobles are more in their own house. Houses seem to ally with houses without concern for the racial dynamics.

The Next Day
Nesh gives us a heads up, and then drops his magic resistance.

Verga? the guy Nesh was talking to back at the inn, appears in a hologram. “Do the names Karina or Ilyana mean anything to you?” Ilyana was Nesh’s mother, as it turns out; he doesn’t remember the name Karina.

Verga has found reports of an attack on a saurien woman named Karina and her daughter Ilyana, by people using a similar compass. “So you do think that is likely related, then?” Nesh nods, and Verga says thank you and ends the call.

A little while later we are summoned to Suvatra’s office again. She has a file on Dalin Cheser, who was the horse merchant. He’s only 19 or 20, so it’s not a big file. His parents both died in the last year, and he inherited the business likely significantly earlier than he would have otherwise. The presentation to Her Majesty the Maharani had already been arranged when his mother died; she was expected to do the presentation. He has inherited the job and the obligation. As far as Quartz goes, he’s been a dwarf weaponsmith for over 100 years. He has a large file but none of which is particularly interesting.

Nothing particularly interesting on Mikhailovich over the last six month’s he’s been in the city. Arrived on a boat claiming to be from Orange (not from a specific city, which Stella flags is unusual). Suvatra probably won’t be able to get a file quickly on whether anyone in Orange knows him. It looks to her as if he introduced himself into society fairly quickly and easily; a Saurien who is a talented Yellow mage drew attention. It caused quite a stir for a few months. He does not seem to have evacuated anything from the rooms he was staying in. He was both a skilled mage and skilled in the social arts, and a Saurien with a large amount of resistance. There were a few vetting efforts when he was hired as the chief engineer. They did not turn up anything untoward; it’s unclear as of yet whether… it’s currently her suspicion that he used a Yellow spell to make it look like he dropped his defenses and nothing untoward showed up. He was likely not higher than 20 Magic dice. He wasn’t a priest or a combatant at all. Likely also a Green mage, given the supplies recovered from his rooms. He did not have a Yellow disguise, most likely. Unless he had 20 dice, 15 suppress, a schtick in my spell cuts through my suppress, and a spell of my illusion isn’t detectable by yellow, he could possibly had a yellow illusion up. He could have had a potion of shapeshift, or maybe a Red spell? Hmm.

Scout tries to find him– with 14 successes and 19 DI, he’s clear that Mikhailovich is no longer in the country. That means he didn’t have 15 successes of suppress, which means he didn’t use the personal suppress to hide the bombs.
We engage in a small army combat. There are two infantry units and two cavalry units, defending the merchant unit. The army combat goes about as well as can be expected, losing one cavalry unit and taking damage to both infantry units, but destroying all six slith forces.

Jabril and Vidan notice that there are character actions happening outside of the Army Combat, which is unusual. An assassination attempt is underway! Jabril activates Diomarche, asking what the heck. Vidan activates the PCs, one at a time. Scout decides he is SEEING THE ASSASSIN, DARN IT, and drops all his DI and Fortune. He gets past the assassin’s DI defenses and can see her sneaking into the camp over the wall that Managaratha has created.

The fight is on. Scout calls out Invader Invading! and shoots the assassin– a single human woman. She decides she was not well-configured for this number of awake people, so tries to flee.

We refuse to give up the chase, going after her through several battle maps.
Eventually she decides to
She uses her Lucky Break schtick, but collectively we beat her, so she runs into Jabril as she goes to the next battlemap. We finish her off.

Combat Aftermath

We find a white and black circular thing that is probably loot. Also +1 dagger. Also, she is dead.

Oh hey, look, Jabril is a priest of Jord. That’s probably why he was activating Diomarche.

We go to search her tent. Vidan gets 14 successes with Detective. There is less Merchant stuff than you’d expect; it was just a cover. There’s a locked, probably trapped chest. Scout takes a look– it’s definitely trapped, more than 6 successes. We enlist Jabril, who is able to open it,

Ninja loot! Several poisons, a few non-magic daggers, a blowgun, a few throwing moons, a strangling cord. Vidan takes the throwing moons; Scout takes the poisons. Some of them are inhaleable things.

Managaratha analyzes her blood. (eww.) A human female corpse who was… last alive five years ago? That’s weird. Ah, maybe she’s been unscryable for 5 years? Hmm.

The Centaurs lost 1 of two units, so quite a few centaurs, the infantry took damage but not as much. For killing six slith units, that’s not bad.

Managaratha looks at the disc– he gets 2 Detect Magic but doesn’t notice anything. Scout can’t see it at all. That’s suspicious. Stella takes a look– it seems more ceramic than metal.

Eventually we ask Suvatra– it’s an anti-scrying Talisman. Probably divine. It would need to be attuned to make you unscryable, rather than just being unscryable yourself. It’s not un-common.

In the Capital

We get into the capital, but the Maharani is not here. We are put up at the palace. Vidan thinks about whether there’s enough time to do his seed-Purple-teleport-anchors here. It looks like we have a few days.

Vidan enlists a realtor, but decides the Priest district would be more likely to draw attention; he goes to the Servant district instead.

Stella spends a few days healing the wounded soldiers.

Diomarche noodles around in historic areas. Many of them are in the palace.

Managaratha tries to Gather Information about Feelings magic. Are there quantifiable ways of doing feelings? That seems hard. Anger Fear Love Jealousy, but you could also have Suspicion, say. You could have a Feeling about what’s behind the door, which is Clairvoyance-ish. There seem to be a lot of Mages here– people just learn Magic in a way they don’t many other places. (Maybe except in Purple.) Ah, he’s mostly interacting with the top three Varna, that probably concentrates the magical talent more. Servants with Magic dice probably get funneled into another Varna…

Scout goes to the Elf district, and Gale tags along. Gale is also interested in getting a “don’t be anxious” Yellow trinket for Dalin. Gale flirts a bit, but decides maybe that’s rude if she already has a date. Wait, what? Scout is confused. Gale finds lots of people who are happy to Adventure. Some elves tell Scout about the Tree Network– there’s a Tree in the district, yeah. They don’t really know how it works.

Scout goes to check it out. There’s a courtyard with columns, open to the sky. A high elf asks if she can be of assistance. Scout hopes so. He wanted to learn about the Trees. They allow a certain amount of travel, but it is not easy. Am I in need of a Tree?

Gale tries to come along, but seems to have gotten distracted.

The area with the tree in it is a different environment– it is grassy, not scrub and desert. It is holy to spirits, not the Goddess. Weirdly, Middlesea is confident that this is a place that is a Spirit– but it is not just the spirit of this place, it is the Spirit of the Tree places. Scout’s friend is clear that it is/was quite large. It’s been split up? It’s not all here? That’s very weird. It doesn’t feel violent that it is not all here, but it was definitely… yeah. Weird.

“Have their been troubles?”

“Messalani’s opinions not withstanding, the network is perfectly usable. It is somewhat more difficult than it has been in the past, but it is not Broken or Shattered in any way.”

The ecology of the area is hard to read, as it is poorly defined. It’s not in Yellow; it’s not in Green. Scout could, if he chose to, go to the Tree, and be in the area proper, rather than this part of the tree that is protruding. Scout spends 5 DI and takes a look at the Tree. That is definitely part of a very big spirit. Scout could make it an offering, and travel through the spirit to another Tree, or use Green magic without an offering, but that might be… not quite rude, but. Scout is fairly clear stepping into it without the rest of the group is not a good idea.

This point of contact is shrinking– very slowly. It’s smaller than when it was made, and will probably keep shrinking. By next Comet it may not survive; it needs reinforcing or it will get kicked out. Scout can’t tell clearly whether the shrinking is making it work less well. It’s definitely bigger than 20 DI, but I can’t see it all from here. It’s probably not as big as the Oasis? But it’s hard to tell from here.

Looking at where the Green goes, it looks like you could use Green Magic to cast passplant even if you don’t know passplant, to go to one of a number of places. It goes out of the country, but maybe not as far as Green? I don’t think so? Not exactly? 3 Analyze Green for 10s– it is mostly Nature rather than Alchemy. There is some… there was some Essence in the original creation, that has changed the Spirit? But the Green that is still active is mostly Nature.

Loot

Caravan: Day 4

We have seen Talinda sneak into two tents, but not what she is doing. (Stella thinks Hawk Seller is also suspicious).

Managaratha wanders around looking for magical sigils, especially Talinda's birds. No spells on the birds right now. The merchant tents have different sigils, the military has all the same sigil. He also thinks that we should ask Lissa Terra for help because yellow is exactly what we need to watch invisible people.

Vidan's thoughts from people-watching: Suvatra is clearly publicly important. She's not easily approachable in this context, as the Queen's Representative. Lissa Terra is just Lissa Terra-ing it up, being mildly eccentric and approachable and doing whatever.

We ask Lissa Terra for help. She can "do an unreality" to see what happened.

Stella talks to Fasanta - yes, she is aware Talinda snuck into her tent. She appreciates the concern.

At lunch, Lissa Terra comes over and casts a little mini-diorama of the tent. The flap to Fasanta's tent opens, and Talinda is inside and turns visible. They have tea, and talk about roses. Lissa Terra waves her hand - they talk about the history of the third queen of the second dynasty of the last comet. She keeps waving her hand and it keeps being random esoteric subjects. Too many defenses.

She tries another tack, with a different sort of spell (precog?) on things we want to know: there are reasonable odds that we catch someone that we think is an assassin - not someone we've met - but reasonable odds that we don't.

Stella wanders around to gather information, and gets 5 karma.
She hears:

Centaurs complaining about the drought

"No, really, some time next week I'm going to meet my true love, the seer in the Golden Tower promised me"

Two of the priests of Life in the military unit push her on branches - they mention that Talinda is Love's servant. Vestal is Life's servant. They don't know if there's a Lore's servant around, there might be, they're less obvious.

Vestal is a name we haven't heard before. Ahah!

Gale gets that Vestal is in the merchant caravan somewhere, and Lieutenant Meskana is second in command of the two-leg military unit and Lieutenant Konstantine is in command of the centaur cavalry.

The two-leg unit is Captain Asan's but he is also in charge of the pair, so Meskana is dealing with day-to-day in the two-legs. Captain Asan is also the person who talks to Suvatra the most.

Diomarche talks to centaurs; one is from the herd next to him. He's heard a rumor that the cousins are spreading the dryness.

We remember to ask Alasfal (our temporary servant who we have forgotten about) about what she has noticed.

The military is more on alert than when we started. Slith are a possibility to be in the neighborhood at this point.

The merchants have not made a ton of progress in making a presentation that will actually change anything (for anyone but them)

She thinks something is up with Jabril and she can't tell what it is.

She's not sure what Talinda is doing, but has noticed she's doing something. She agrees with Stella that Talinda is not a very good merchant.

She does not think Vestal is up to anything, which is interesting in its own right.

Suvatra and Lissa Terra are working together more than they appear.

We decide that:

We are all against assassination unless the Maharani is actually working with the Breaker

Stella doesn't like inefficient merchanting and Managaratha thinks heroes of the Comet should be rich, and no one is in favor of inefficient merchanting, so we are cautiously on that side.

We are really unclear what is going on in the love plot plots (Talinda?, the Golden Seer true love plot) but that is clearly Gale's problem.

We get Alasfal to organize a dinner party tomorrow to invite merchants to.

Vidan goes and sneaks around in his sandy cloak with some DI in witnessing and being supposed to be there. He sees the defenses on Suvatra's tent, which are decent, and maybe a little relevant? And Talinda is going to visit Merindal. That's important but not to the assassination. Vidan thinks she's Stella's opposition, but that's not right.

Managaratha dodders over to near Vestal and nods off.

Gale asks after the Seer in the Golden Tower. Nobody knows where the Golden Tower is, but they are someone to consult when one is on a quest. But people run into the Golden Tower even when they are not on a quest.

Day 5

Gale asks Dalin what Talinda is up to. She is a Feelings mage - that's how she trains her birds up. She uses that to make her birds do things better. She was wondering whether that would work on horses. (But that's clearly not what she talked about with everyone else. And why invisible?)

WAIT WHAT? -Managaratha

He talks to Talinda. She hasn't noticed anything weird with feelings. Has she accomplished what she wants to accomplish sneaking into everyone's tent? Yes.

No current spells on Dalin. Can Lissa Terra tell if that's what they actually talked about? Or was that just another bounce? She gets an unreal "merfolk gills or tails"?

Gale brings Stella - a large DI hammer to fix him. She thinks something very small was removed. Vidan does a detective conversational interrogation. Now he remembers that she cast some spells on him that he didn't remember before. Not forgotten, just made unimportant.

Lunch of Merchants

Stella makes her persuasion roll, with Vidan's assistance, and gets 8 successes.

Jabril is the most interested of the not-big-4.

Vidan passes around contact information - Vestal trades in incense.

People notice that Talinda and Jabril are paying more attention to the fact that Stella is the one making the spiel.

(Laura now thinks Jabril is a secret Lore cultist of Allan).

Some people look suspiciously at Vestal when she says she's from the capital.

Vidan makes a good pitch for the final four after everyone else has left (Vestal followed by Gale). 8 successes of solid moving things forward.

Then Vidan talks to Suvatra - were this the Empire, here is my list of people who need background checks.

Vestal: merchants based in the city and the other merchants in the city think that is an odd statement. Make sure you do Vestal first.
<4 merchants>

Talinda: probably not involved in the problem we are discussing, but this one is obviously love.

The Captain rides up and says there's a force of slith between us and the capital, and they need to discuss it.

Loot:

73.4.152.160: /* The Merfolk War (C-2) */

World History
Notes on what happened when, as we discover it. For now, this will mostly be notes from things we discovered in the last run. Information on events more recent than that will be added as we stumble upon it.

By convention, Comets will be referred to by the number of Comets ago they happened; e.g., "three Comets ago", or C-3.

Recent Events
Things that have happened since the last Comet / during this Comet.

The War of the Lord and Lady (C-1)
* The Land Bridge between Kor and Kern is created, sealing the Inland Sea.
* Melmaine becomes a single large island, instead of an archipelago.
* (??) The Plains of Geddon appear in Red, making it Holy ground to Rush.

The Merfolk War (C-2)
Not so much happened on the mainland (as Comets go - there are a few things that happened), but the Merfolk moved from the Western Ocean to the Eastern one and started fighting the Slith. Managaratha helped them to move, per <Book 2 Run 5>.

Rainbow River Disappears (C-3)
The Oasis takes over the desert east of 'al Jabar.

About half of the cataurs are Unbroken in 'al Jabar and become centaurs. (This may have happened in the interstitial time.)

Previous Run (C-4)
Lots happens:
* Centaurs and cataurs come back into the world; the Valley moves from VaKels to ShuMash, the Oasis moves from Avan to 'al Jabar.
* Slith reappear, invading everywhere from under the sea.
* Sauriens reappear, start to have children again.
* Male priests of the Goddess come into the world.
* 'al Jabar becomes a place where beings are Unbroken.
* Avan becomes a homeland of the Twins; ShuMash becomes a homeland for Spirits; the whole eastern subcontinent becomes a homeland for the Nameless.
* Possibly: Ratha becomes a homeland for the Goddess; Trelmane becomes holy to the Five.
* The Orcslayer becomes the first King of the West, where he is Overlord of the five countries, each of which is somewhat weakened.
* In Elfheim, the Arba-Sol is defeated and the Tree is destroyed, freeing many many elf souls from having been bound to it.

Rebellion Against Avan (C-5)
About 700 years before C-4.

Tureen and her band of heroes rise up against the oppressive Avani Empire, and it fractures into many countries.

Founding of Avan (C-6)
The Avani empire was founded 1683 years before C-4, uniting the east and west subcontinents of the mainland.

Marriage Comet (C-7)
Heroes of Kern happens a few hundred years after this Comet.

Centaur/Cataur War (C-8)
Neverending Winter (C-9)
The Last Warlock sheds his tears, converts to the Five, and men stop being able to learn witchcraft.

The Great War (C-10)
The orcs are unified under a Chieftan and march south; Kor and Kern lead the defense against them, and come to political dominance for several comets.

Magic Goes Haywire (C-11)
Ancient History
* There have been about 40 comets total (maybe 45 now).
* Many comets ago, the Inland Sea is created when the mainland sinks.
* Poisoning of the air causes Sauriens and slith to become "extinct"; Sauriens lose the ability to produce young, slith are driven under the sea to escape the poison. The Goddess and the Nameless provide a miracle giving some Sauriens incredibly long life, against the day they are able to have children again.

Scout phases in. The gang’s all here! That’s strange. But since everyone is here, Vidan explains the mechanic for the "forming the party, Purple style" ritual, but we cannot do it today because while everyone is here, not everyone has a spare EP.

# First Vidan (with help from Managaratha) will use purple magic to create a place outside of time and space where rules and names can be changed.
# Everyone will pledge their loyalty to the Conclave Freerangers.
# Everyone will pledge their loyalty to the Conclave Freerangers in Truespeech.
# Everyone spends an EP to build the structure for future group shticks.

Vidan cautions that speaking the oath in Truespeech might reveal/assert one’s “true designator” if you’re not careful. There is some discussion about what that means– if someone tries to assert that they are They Who Shall Be King, will it happen? Only if that’s true. Hmm.

Scout tries to get caught up on what happened.

Vidan goes to talk to Violet regarding security details for Wendy’s coronation. One of the details under discussion is whether it will be in the Temple or at the Castle. Security concerns are different in each location. What is Vidan worried about, that might factor into discussions with Mary.

Vidan thinks the other Houses are sufficiently in line, so that they’re not so much the problem, but slith attacks and Breaker priests that got away are more concerning. Violet agrees that none of the siblings are a serious concern. Vidan thinks that there might be more issues with the party in the Temple? But maybe not, this whole country is Holy to Rush. Though the alarms would have to be dealt with.

Maybe Vidan should talk to the Castellan about security? Or just talk to Mary. A first Succession is a notable event, and fragile in a way that a second Succession won’t be. Violet thinks she doesn’t need bonus DI for the Coronation– a point or two for a blessing should be sufficient.

(Greg is the priest of the Nameless that we are suspicious might be a Broken priest.)

For reasons unclear to the party, hearing this inspires Managaratha to recall some memories, and mumbles them aloud. For reasons more clear to the party, they are somewhat hard to follow:

* Managaratha remembers that Mage Marek, who is Blue, was talking to a Sylph. “Of course I’ve been told Veracci doesn’t have any magic”

* “Of course my Lady can help with that, Victor…”
She has a favor to ask in return, she wants to track down a Saurien who left Jabar 25 years ago, a woman.

* A priest of the Goddess, it would be difficult to arrange Blessings for the Empire.

* Minister Cho was making overtures to a woman from Jabar named Gadara.

Vidan goes to visit Mary. He’s interested in helping prepare the Coronation security arrangements, and wants to ensure access to his team. Mary is happy to provide invitations to the Coronation, but is less happy with a blanket “you can always be in Wendy’s presence”. But she will have Vidan talk to the captain of the Guard. They have taken some steps against assassins since the King’s death.

Mary is curious if our group or any of its members feel themselves authorized to make deals under the aegis of the Conclave. Despite the unfortunate occurrence at the Conclave, the goals are still important. Vidan says we’re probably leaving after the Coronation. (Gale mutters that no one remembers we’re supposed to be creating alliances between countries and the merfolk.)

Vidan brings Diomarche and Managaratha to talk to the captain of the guard, Sebastian. He doesn’t go into detail but is happy to have our insight. Vidan allows as we have some... revelatory abilities that could be useful. A priest of the Goddess, for instance, who can see things that need fixing. Sebastian will keep that in mind. He hopes the Coronation will be at the Castle, as then both the Coronation and Transfer of Office will occur– the high priest of Rush will be transferring the Generalship to Her Majesty. The Temples have their own security, if that’s where the coronation happens. Vidan is offended by the "transfer of the Generalship" part - that's not appropriate for a kid!

Diomarche goes to talk to Earnest at the Temple of Rush, to get more information about the Generalship versus the Kingship, and how that works elsewhere. In Darstan, she is the General, and he is the Ruler. But Iona and __ are both General and Ruler.

Diomarche briefs Earnest that there are potential threats; Earnest hopes the Confirmation will occur in the Temple, where they can provide the most security. Karen will be conducting the ceremony/ritual. He would be surprised if anyone makes a frontal assault on either ceremony. Another assassin is certainly a possibility, and one they are less well... assassins are less their area of expertise, than a more frontal assault. But they will do what they can. Diomarche is also concerned about a Broken priest in the area; Earnest hadn’t heard about that. What’s his approximate confidence level that there is such a person? Hmm. Gale had had an Unreality Dream about adventures; an unlikely but possible option involved a Broken priest, but there was also something in the Succession mechanic, maybe?

The coronation is in two days time. (Salamander 1, maybe?)

Stella will go see what needs fixing at the castle; the rest of the group comes with. 9 successes, 8 DI tells her: no holes, but things could get past their security. The country turn draw went well for the Slith, they drew Wheel of Fortune, Berana drew 7 or 8 of Rods, but there’s not much to be done about that. We’re not going to buff the Country-level defenses any time soon. But on the other hand the Goddess thinks that’s not a terrible use of Slith country moves. The castle can probably see anyone who is 10 or 12 successes hidden. It would take a reasonable-sized army unit to beat them. They’re not a big army unit, they could probably hold off long enough to get reinforcements from the Rushians or the Town Guard or something. And there’s no attacking them as an army unit in any sort of stealthy way. Their biggest vulnerability is potential loyalty issues to one of the other candidates. That’s not currently a thing that can really be fixed much; it’s in about as good shape as it could be, but it could deteriorate and requires monitoring. That’s more of a long-term issue for the country. She won, she’ll be Queen with a Regent, but the rest of them have not necessarily given up. Maybe they want the Generalship, maybe they want something else to build their own power. Or maybe they think they’ll be King/Queen again, if something happened. And there are definitely people in the Guard who might get pushed to help one way or the other. So building up personal loyalty in the Guard to Mary and Wendy would be a solid long-term project. But it’s not necessary between now and the Coronation. You could try to work it into the Coronation or Transfer of Power, some more direct oaths from the Guards to those people, maybe as a group? That could help; it’s unlikely to be a huge thing one way or the other. That’s the single biggest threat area, and one that the Captain of the Guard is probably not going to be happy about that.

Gale thinks spinning that as "the oaths of the Guard are important" is the way to sell it, rather than "the Guard could have loyalty issues".

Vidan goes to talk to Violet again about his PERSONAL PLOT. He’s from the Empire, so he’s unused to the rituals here. (She is curious about that.) What is her take on the whole Transfer of Generalship thing? What’s the deal? Violet is careful when she answers; it’s a fairly well established custom in Red, at this point. The temples of Rush and the Five are separate, he will have noticed. Sometimes the priests of Rush fail to remember that Rush is Navere’s General, not The General. It is a thing one gets used to eventually. There is of course a shrine to Rush in the Temple of the Five, but it is rarely visited. Vidan allows as to how he would be interested in speaking more of this, if she is interested. She clearly has something else she considered telling him, but rolled well enough to not reveal it, but does say that some do take longer to come to the understanding than others. Vidan does mention his powers of Ecumenicity.

Gale, still worrying about the high priest of the Nameless, tries to figure out where he lives. All four of the high priests (not Rush) live in the Temple of the Five. We clarify that Broken Priests are orcs and Bent Priests are human. Bent priests are the hard ones to find. The priest of the Nameless is probably not a Broken priest.

Nesh scavenges. Scout scouts the Castle, looking for Broken priests or other people other casing the joint. The guards notice him casing the joint, but don’t do anything beyond talk to the Captain and keep an eye on them. Scout does notice there’s a Ritual Room in the top of that Tower. Scout also pokes about for elves– there aren’t any Green ex-pats, but there’s a Troll and a few sea creature Pooka, etc. who had come through the Rainbow Isles. They’ve heard of Gale. The Troll is a freelance bodyguard, born and bred in Berana. There is a Mage with Yellow as well as Red that can be hired, but they’re expensive (Liza).

Vidan asks the Priest of Orellian about ritual rooms– Olanson’s Red mage probably had a space in the castle. It wouldn’t be tuned for Purple– he doesn’t really know anything about Purple– but that’s probably the best shot in the city. There’s a room tuned for holy rituals in the Temple; there are a few other mages in town that might have such a thing, but you’d probably have to do them a favor.

Stella wanted to look at a sword. It was a wedding present. Made in Orange. One of the events in the last run was a Betrothal Party for Princess Volga and this guy from Orange. Might be related to the people selling swords plot? Not like the Stabby Dagger of Stabbing, because that had active magic on it. Stella thinks it was like a sword at the Plains of Gedden, and another she saw somewhere but can't place.

Princess Volga blows off the delegation of Stella, Managaratha, and Scout concerned about the sword. She'll look into it and if she finds reason to be concerned, she may get back in touch with them.

Coronation Day
The Coronation mostly goes off without incident. Wendy gets oaths of loyalty from all of the other contenders, and from her mother. Not from all of her siblings. Violet puts a DI or two of Blessing into the ritual, not a schtick of You Are Queen. Then there’s a half hour break, for snacks, and then the Transfer of Office happens. Princess Volga and her fiance say that Stella can come tomorrow to look at the sword.

Karen gets up to conduct the Transfer of Office. Many of the people are the same, although it’s fewer Nobles, and there are also some Captains of Mercenary groups that give loyalty. The Lord Captain Commander’s Men don’t, but some paladins that serve in her armies do. (Karen does not; Violet does not.) Karen doesn’t spend any DI on the ritual.

Scout keeps an eye on DI; Karen, Violet, and Greg (Nameless) are the three biggest priests; 12 DI give or take. Earnest has 8 or 9. Everyone else is smaller than the priests in the party.

Gale keeps an eye on the High Priest of the Nameless - he seems to be rolling his eyes about as much as Vidan does in the Transfer of Office, but he is not doing anything obviously suspicious.

Gale flirts at the party and meets a charming young man who does not get mugged overnight when she goes home with him. (Frederick)

Visiting the Sword
The party takes up Volga's offer to look at the sword, and Investigates it:
* Scout thinks it was probably made with Magic, but it’s a sword now.
* Stella thinks something needs fixing about it, but she still can't put her finger on it.
* Gale thinks it’s a nice sword, but thinks something with Battle might help. So she wilds up a Battle diagnostic spell for 8s that might help figure out what’s going on, and she goes into a Frenzy while attacking the target dummy. Scout thinks she’s been hit harder with the Battle magic consequence than she should have been, which shouldn’t have been an issue…

Stella throws her DI at it. That sword is like a sword made in the Broken Lands. It is trying to Break people. You’d have to wield the sword for a year or more before it had that effect. Fixing things by Cleansing would probably do it.

Stella explains, but won’t be able to fix it until tomorrow.

Diomarche remembers that a sergeant in the Keep in the Broken Lands run wondered how Queen Ionia of Victoria got so many berserkers. Stella thinks Captain Jones at the Paladins’ camp at the Plains of Gedden had one. And maybe others?

Vidan visits and chats with Greg - what was up with the whole Rush ceremony? Is that how things are here? Greg thinks that as Absolutely Disgraceful, and is willing to be drawn out more than Violet was. The Church of Rush is totally overstepping its bounds - rituals for the fallen, rituals for the new ruler. They might not have stepped on Orellian's toes yet, but they have priests of logistics that are kind of Jordian...

Are people happy with this? He doesn't think so - some people think things should be different, others think this is just how they are, but nobody *likes* it specifically. Vidan says, let me know if you figure out anything to do - Greg suggests that maybe when Middlesea gets loose something will happen.

Thinking about it, Vidan thinks that the Twins are pretty split now too. Day and Night don't talk to each other, and Balance is in the Bureaucracy and not anywhere else.

Nesh says that they’ll be at Middlesea when it comes down, is there someone they should be looking for? The priest of Jord who went with Princess Friga is named Dora, and Westrack is a priest of the Nameless from Victoria.

Vidan gets Earnest and ? to be convinced about the strange non-Broken swords. Stella purifies it (9 successes 8 DI blows it away).

Diomarche passes this along to Bran via a previously set up spell.

Time to do the ritual. After some tossing different names around, we settle on Conclave Free Rangers as the name, to suggest alliance / against-the-Breaker / freedom / scouting.

It's 8 successes rather than 7...

The room fades away, we're on a featureless plain, someone near Scout says "Incoming!", and...

Magic Rules

You probably noticed the world has colored zones now.

The Rainbow River is gone, and each of the colored zones is a perpetual field of that magic color in which random magic occasionally happens (less often than on one of the river sides, but periodically).

The zone you were born in (your "color") changes how you interact with magic. You may never learn any spells of the opposed color. You may learn not just the base-version of your color's magic, but also the two other varieties that were present in the surges. You may learn one of the other four colors' base-version with no negative interference effects. You may not be a Rainbow Mage.

In a zone, spells of the opposed color only work if they are the base-version of that color, and even those are one difficulty harder, and if they have a duration it will drop significantly. Spells of a non-base-version of a non-opposed color are one difficulty harder.

If you were born on the "Rainbow Isles" in the Inland Sea (or on the open ocean or somewhere else weird and not in the colored zones), you get the old magic rules - one base-color, the opposed base-color is learnable by giving up dispels, learning non-opposed colors either burns out your skill or requires having a Rainbow Mage shtick/skill. There's no school teaching Rainbow Magic, but there are rumored to be a couple of self-taught Rainbow Mages in the Rainbow Isles. All spells work at their normal difficulty in those areas.

Spells cost 1 skill point. Skill in a full base-version of a color is breadth five 5, more limited base-version skills are narrower. Skill in a full non-base version of a color costs 3 (if you can buy it at all). If you have access to broader skills, you can get full-base+1 non-base for breadth 6 and full-base+both non-base for 7.

Spells that buff dice will be higher difficulty than they used to be.

Note that color is based on what zone you are born in, not what your parents were or where you grew up. For Elves that's "where you returned the last time you heard your song." Half-elves don't *normally* change color when they hear their song, but you might be able to argue me into it as a special case. If you don't start as a Mage, you can choose not to know what your actual color is. I might let you choose it later, or I might choose it for you.

Endurance Costs

It requires a lot of concentration to cast magic spells. Accordingly, how much End you spend depends on your Will (Mind stat). It also depends on the difficulty of the spells, harder spells taking more concentration. Each time you cast enough spells to generate difficulty points equal to your Mind, you spend a point of End.

Horrible Awryage

To quote from the webpage:

The term Magic ... is reserved for describing the skill of manipulating the six Colors of Chaos. As the name implies, it's a chancy skill, with a moderately high probability of something going dreadfully wrong if you don't know exactly what you're doing.

I'm not going to try to quantify Awryage here, but I want to give you an idea when and how it might come about. Consider this fair warning.

* Awryage never happens unless you get at least one success on your roll. You've simply failed to generate any magic at that point.
* If you know the spell you're casting, see how many ones you rolled. If you rolled at least three, awryage is possible. Initial awryage is likely to be fairly harmless (your fireball's a different color from usual, or something), but as the number of ones increases, it can be bad (the fireball misses the target is on the order of 6 ones, the fireball lands at your feet is nine or ten). If you get twice as many ones as successes, there's ALWAYS awryage. You can use skill points IN THE SPELL to cancel out ones (those skill points then can't be used for successes).
* If you're casting wild magic, count up ones and any die which is more than 5 below your difficulty number to see if there's awryage. You can use skill to bring numbers up to within 5 of your difficulty, if you want to do that instead of generate more successes. Then use rules above.
